Today my calendar was a scheduled dichotomy: a memorial service and a delivery of gifts to a family in need.
Today was a day of remembering and paying respects to a woman I have known since I was 17. I had the opportunity to share with others in attendance the wonderful memories I have of Evelyn and the impact she had on my life. I had just returned to America from having lived in Italy and felt a foreigner in my native country. Evelyn was my sister in law’s mother and she made me feel like I had a grandmother when in fact both sets of grandparents were deceased. She had a way of making me feel special by the way she spoke and listened to me at a time when I felt particularly lost and vulnerable.
Today was also a day I helped make memories for 10 little kids who have nothing but a roof over their heads with little in the way of clothing, food, and furniture. As part of a Couples Bible Study group we set out to give each child an article of clothing, and a toy to open on Christmas Morning. But giving is infectious and we also donated a bed, living room furniture, a Christmas tree, a nativity, and the fixings for a holiday pork roast dinner. The mother and her sister cried tears of thanksgiving and several of the children reached up to hug those delivering the priceless items we take for granted. Items that have never been a part of these children’s lives.
Today I was reminded of the gift of memories I have of a wonderful lady.
Today I helped make a memory that will stay in the lives of these young souls for years to come.
Today is the day the Lord had made. I will be glad and rejoice in it.
It is my wish that my readers have both wonderful memories to remember and the opportunity to make memories for others this Christmas.
May the spirit of Christ live within you and may you share it with those you touch.
Merry Christmas!
Another beautifully written article about life at is worst and at its best. It is so wonderful how God has a way of balancing this life out. Thank you my friend for bringing this to light for all to read. Love you my friend. R
December 20, 2014 at 7:51 pmThank you, Rose. God has blessed me with such a strong feeling of cherishing the memories I have had with Evelyn and with how we can be a catalyst for memories for others…even those who we do not know but God has placed in our path.
