When the hurricanes of life come blowing into my little corner of the world I find it hard to think of anything else but how to stay safe, intact and survive. How about you? How do you cope? Where do you run? Where do you feel safe?
I recently heard my pastor speak on this very topic and I found it so incredibly helpful in any situation where I feel like I am being blown to smithereens. I want to share it with you.
First and foremost – Go to God. Choose to trust God. Look, you can’t always trust others, nor even yourself at times. But God, who is ever present cand be trusted.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).
We must put all our trust in the Lord and not our own knowledge. The verse tells us not to be reliant on our strength and knowledge, but to trust in the Lord.
The second is to Choose Acceptance. There are some things we cannot change and yet we resist to accept this. We spend a lot of time fighting against what we do not have control over. Acceptance doesn’t mean we give up, rather is means accepting that “it is what it is” at this time and place.
The third is to Let Go of the Control and Let God. Let’s face it, we were never really in control in the first place. I have really struggled with wanting to be in control of—well everything. And the only thing it really did was to make me exhausted, tired, frustrated, and even angry. Letting go takes practice but it can be so freeing with a level of peace that does defy my own understanding.
Maree Dee is quoted as saying “Surrendering our pain to God doesn’t mean the struggle isn’t real; but it does mean we don’t have to carry it alone.” I really like the idea of not carrying the burdens of this life by myself.
Lastly, Stay in the Present. Push away what might be to stay in the moment. It serves no purpose to try and plan for all possibilities when only God knows what will happen in the future.
Friends, hurricanes happen to us all. Maybe not literally a hurricane, but it could be the loss of a family member, monetary concerns, medical mayhem – there are a plethora of storms out there. But with each onslaught we must continually –
- Trust God,
- Choose acceptance,
- Let and let God,
- Stay in the present.
Are you in a storm right now? How do you cope? What can you do to strengthen you for a time such as this? I pray you find this blog post of help and know that I will be praying for each and every one of you.
