“Years end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.” – Hal Borland.
There are some years where we cannot wait for the year to end because of what we have endured or has transpired. We look to the new year as a “new beginning”. And while for many this can give one the strength to persevere; I like Hal Borland’s idea that our lives are a continuum with each year bringing insights and observations and knowledge from the past into the future to form a bigger picture.
It helps me to think differently about my past and utilize both the big defining moments along with the tiny little almost unnoticed moments that can make the difference in not just surviving but thriving. We don’t have to wait for a new year to begin again but each new day can be the start of a “new year” if we choose.
God has instructed us in Psalm 118:24 “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Each new day as a gift from the Lord, a fresh opportunity to experience joy and gladness. It reminds us that no matter what yesterday held, today is a chance to start again.
Hal Borland was an American author, journalist, and naturalist. He is know for his 1964 book “Sundial of the Seasons” where he observed each passing day combined to form a bigger picture of the changing seasons.
