Ever feel like you are a mechanic working on a car or maybe a maintenance or facilities worker for an apartment building? I do. Except the car or apartment building is my body. Or rather Thad’s and my body. And there’s always something that needs fixing.
You see, lately our world seems to be comprised of doctors appointments, blood draws, radiology screenings, and pharmacy visit. In between its become difficult to schedule the fun stuff. You know, dinner with friends, movies, family get togethers – the fun stuff that adds color to our world and makes living worthwhile. My son-in-love recently reminded me of this when he came to borrow my car when theirs was in the shop and asked me “Does this car know how to go anywhere non-medical?” Pretty funny stuff but also kind of true.
Without some fun stuff, it makes it emotionally and spiritually difficult to maintain these bodies. So every once in a while you have to take a break. Even if that break is simply cheese and crackers and a glass of wine on the patio as the sun is setting on the day. It could be a spur of the moment picnic in the park with a sandwich and a piece of fruit from a local vendor between appointments. Or a well-planned weekend away on a cruise or at the beach.
Here are a few reminders that Jesus is always with us and offers us rest:
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day, God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
Hebrews 4:9-11 There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest”.
Exodus 33:14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Yes, life is hectic but we must try to remember to focus on relaxing amidst the stress and be refreshed by planning rest into our day. This can help us feel less overwhelmed and more available to God and His plans. Isn’t that what is truly important?
It is in this vein that I write to say that I am going to take a break from blogging and spend that time re-grouping, re-connecting, and possibly re-wiring my brain and re-working my body. I will miss you all but I’ll be back in the Fall ready to see the full spectrum of color that God has and is creating.
Will you join me in carving out some time for the fun stuff? What will you do and how will you plan for it. Big or small. Plan it, schedule it, and write it in pen on your calendar. Because it is truly what colors our world and makes our life bright. Besides if you do make time for the fun, you’re less likely to notice and feel the not so fun stuff.
