It’s About Time

We use that phrase for so many things.

“It’s about time they serve us our meal!”

“Its about time they opened another register at the grocery store”

“Its about time they moved the accident vehicles to the side of the road.”

Our life today is all about time and the lack there of.  While electronics and devices have made many jobs easier and freeing up time; we find ourselves adding more to our day, and working faster.  This leaves us with the feeling that we don’t have time to do the things we want to do because we have too much work to do and so little time to get it done.

Its about time.

And yet, I’d like to propose a different use of that phrase.

“It’s about time this virus ran its course and I am well again.”

“Its about time we spend time with one another.”

“Its about time we see the goodness that still exists in this crazy, upside down, topsy-turvy world.”

“Its about time we take the time for the things we love, for the people we love, and for the beauty that surrounds us.”

“It’s about time to slow down and spend time with God.”

Time with God.  Oh, my!  More often than not, we ‘sandwich’ our time with God in between grocery lists, events on our calendar and work demands. Sometimes, I feel like I am just checking time with Jesus like an item on my To Do List.  In other words, I am not present.

“It’s about time, I stopped and spend time with those people that are important in my life.  Its about time I make time for God.

This phrase meant a lot to me recently when my daughter asked me what I wanted for my 70th birthday.  I told I wanted the gift of time with my brothers and their family. Not an easy task as I had not been able to get everyone together even though we all live within a hour of each other.  .  I missed my brothers so much.  And I missed their families so much.  And I missed the craziness, the sweetness, and the banter that exists in my family.

But she pulled it off. And it’s about time, too.  Because the three of us aren’t getting any younger.  The only one that is the healthiest is the oldest who will turn 81 this year!  He and his wife are in good condition and while just a little jealous and in awe of them I am also happy for them.  Meanwhile my 75 year old brother and I seemed to be in a race to see who is going to get to the “Pearly Gates” first.  And then there are other family members and spouses who have active health concerns as well.  So it’s about time that we took the time to spend together.

Francesca was able to rally my brothers and their families to meet mid-point in a small little town for an Italian dinner in a restaurant.  We spent a few hours sharing some good wine, garlic bread, pasta and deserts.  We shared events, laughed, picked on each other, groused, hugged each other and took lots of pictures. We made time to make a memory.  And we began it all by giving thanks to God for bringing us together on that wonderful Saturday afternoon. I felt God was right there at the table with us, breaking bread, smiling and laughing right along with His children.

It was the best birthday gift ever because time is not promised to anybody and while it is fleeting, the time we took makes a memory that lasts forever – clear into eternity.
