Are you a Weeble too?

Thad and I wobble when we walk.  And I have affectionately and with humor called us “Mr. & Mrs.  Weebles”.

Remember the Weebles?  They are a range of children’s roly-poly toys which were introduced in 1971 and are still made today!  They are shaped like an egg and built in such a way that while they wobble, they are built to “achieve stable mechanical equilibrium” (Wikipedia).  Hence the slogan “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down”.

When did we become The Weebles?  I’m not sure but with Thad’s neuropathy and my falling arches/arthritis/scar tissue and bone protrusion in my left foot – we make a perfectly matched couple.  Let’s face it – we wobble.  Completing the image is that we have become a bit roly-poly as well.

Nevertheless, we do our best to walk upright, “heel-toe, heel-toe, lifting our feet wherever we go”.  It isn’t perhaps the greatest look but then we are not trying to win beauty contests.  Rather, we do the best we can on our outer appearance while putting in the work on making our hearts, minds and souls in balance with the Lord our savior.

While it is most evident that we have entered the elderly season of life; we continue to do the things that are most important to us – family, friends, time together, time with our dog, Liesl and time to practice our faith.  That means time in the word, time at church, time in small groups for fellowship and faith building.

Thad attends Forge –  a global brotherhood of men focused on discipleship to inspire spiritual growth among men from ages 18-100. Every Tuesday, our neighbor consistently picks Thad up at 6:15 am and brings him to the weekly 7 am meeting.  Another gentleman comes to the car, greets him and offers to assist Thad to the meeting room.  Recently, upon leaving the facilitator of the local chapter patted Thad on the shoulder and said he was pleased to see Thad attending regularly despite his medical issues.  When Thad responded that it has been a lifeline and blessing to him; the facilitator stated that he is an inspiration of faithfulness & perseverance to the other men in attendance.

One foot in front of the other.  Day by day.  Holding hands and reaching up to Christ and the Father who promises us that He has a purpose for every season in our lives.

We know not what the future brings or its purpose.  Perhaps if nothing else, others will see that despite our infirmities we persevere and that in itself will inspire others who are traveling the same road in the same season to do likewise.  God is good.  He provides us with others to share the time together on our way to eternity.

Unlike the Weebles, though, I cannot guarantee we won’t fall down.  But when we do, we know that Jesus will be right there with His arms around us providing the right equilibrium our souls need.  And we are comforted.  May you find comfort as well.
