I love this time of year because we see a rebirth in nature. To the detriment of us allergy sufferers, our live oak trees shed their leaves, drop pollen like a yellow avalanche covering cars, patios and roads only to sprout new luscious green leaves for shade in the summer. Tiny lizards dart across the sidewalks desperately seeking cover amidst the blades of grass. Baby squirrels frolic from one tree to another taunting my dog as if to say ‘can you catch me now?!”.
But it’s the sandhill cranes and their hatchlings that makes me pause and enjoy the sights of Spring. Literally, we, in the neighborhood, pause. Cars line up as they fearlessly saunter across our streets unperturbed by us humans madly going to and from jobs, schools, and whatever we deem more important than new life. No one honks their horns, no one shakes their heads and yells. We sit and smile, watch and wonder at the marvel of new life.
The babies can barely walk at first and have little more than sprigs for feathers. Over the course of several weeks, their human neighbors will watch enthralled as they quickly go from inches to feet and furballs to silky feathers.
But for right now Mother and father and one or two hatchlings will calmly, fearlessly, confidently with great huck spa casually cross the large boulevard to get to the lake to “wet their whistle”. The “elders” seem unphased and assured that the baby chicks will follow undisturbed by these large metal, roaring, engines. Programed by how God made them, they follow Mom and Dad.
This scenario plays out throughout our day and I believe it is a reminder from God that there is rebirth happening all around us, including in us if we let it. Like the sand hill cranes, we too have a Father who loves us, guides us and wants the best for us. He wants us to follow Him so that no matter what is going in our world, with some determination, confidence and the faith of a mustard seed — or a sand hill crane we will be okay.
So today, stop, sit a spell, capture the birth of Spring as you seek God. And remember – God’s got this.
