You know you are in a season of medical mayhem when you, your spouse, kids grandkids and even the dog have health issues. There you are trying to balance everyone’s needs like an elderly waiter with an overloaded tray of plates of pasta. Doing the best you can to take care of one another but thinking you will all be covered in hot pasta Bolognese.
So what do you do when you are in a season of medical mayhem?
- Educate yourself about your particular illness(es) utilizing doctors, research papers, internet (with caution and only reputable sources), and family and friends. Make the best medical decisions you can based on facts and not just opinions, feelings or fears.
- You are not alone in the mayhem. Look around. You are not the only one with mayhem in your life.
- Keep a record of all reports and medical records.
- Ask for help. It takes a village.
- Accept help when offered. Its not a sign of weakness but of strength.
- Keep plugged into your faith. Attend services if you can or utilize the internet if you cannot. Contact your pastor, church, rabi, synagogue, bible study groups, support groups – It is their mission to provide help. Utilize devotionals and faith based reading.
- Attitude is everything. Seek out and reaffirm the positive that still exist in your life. Remind yourself that seasons come and they go.
- Look for the humor in even the smallest things. Cut out and post humorist cartoons, I keep a steady supply on the side of my refrigerator.
I believe the Holy Bible sums this up better than I can write it:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 The Message
16-18 Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you, who belong to Christ Jesus, to live.
19-22 Don’t suppress the Spirit, and don’t stifle those who have a word from the Master. On the other hand, don’t be gullible. Check out everything, and keep only what’s good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.
23-24 May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!
So, my readers, let us do the ground work here on earth and be assured of the Holy Spirit, who is faithful will prepare us even despite our worse day.
