It’s been a season. Actually its been several seasons – two years of seasons to be exact. Medical Mayhem has been a constant in our lives and has become a “new normal”. Are you there as well? Do you find yourself thinking-
“Lord, what did we do to warrant this?” Or perhaps “Lord, isn’t it time for some healing?”
Ecclesiastes reminds us that God makes everything beautiful in its time.
“Ok, Lord, but isn’t it time? Besides I don’t know how much longer we can handle this.”
It isn’t easy, is it? Long term illness can wear you down till you can’t think or even function at times. And we think if we just do such and such we can resolve this and move on or get back to the way things were. Do you ever negotiate with God that if he relieves us of this pain we will go to church every Sunday, do our daily devotions, curse never more…
But of course, it doesn’t work that way.
I am realizing that although this timeline doesn’t match mine, God has a purpose for this medical mayhem. So how do we (I) handle this? By realizing that healing takes time. Not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. And our whole beings do not recover, strengthen, or renew overnight. While we wait, we need to take time to pursue God, pursue relationships with fellow Christians and perhaps even help others who need guidance even as we seek guidance ourselves.
While we are in the midst of this medical mayhem, God is at work in us if we let him. It helps to remember that “while weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Psalm30:5). In other words, this too shall pass. It maybe taking longer than you would like, but it will pass.
Romans 8:28 tell us “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
By this I mean, we open our hearts to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. We seek the Trinity, spend time in the word, and notice what is still good in our lives. A neighbor who checks in on us, another who drives my hubby to the men’s bible study, the deer that cross my path in the early morning to drink at the lake.
This time is not just of waiting but of strengthening. It is also a time of softening our hearts, surrendering ourselves and releases control. While we can follow the advice of our medical practitioners; it is God who is the true Healer and through this mayhem we learn to trust and lean on Him. I remind myself daily that “Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16:8). I actually post these bible verses around my home to remind us that God is working on our behalf. Therefore, I can trust and rest in Him. Luke 2:1 …And it came to Pass”.
Are you waiting for God to heal you or a family member? What are you feeling, doing and sharing with others while you are waiting?
2 Corinthians 4:16: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day”.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” – Numbers 6:24 NIV
